    KPOP DISCOVER's Red Velvet note

What anchors Red Velvet is the two sides of Red and Velvet. SM Entertainment debuted the girl group on August 1, 2014 with Happiness, and after Yeri joined in 2015 the five of Irene, Seulgi, Wendy, Joy and Yeri settled as the line-up. The bright Red side and the refined, uneasy Velvet side are switched between by the same five.

The summer pop and vivid colour of Red Flavor, the R&B-leaning tension of Psycho, the classical beauty of Feel My Rhythm: each song moves into a different world. Watching the performance videos and dance practices as well shows the grace of the choreography, not only the singing and the visuals.

The polish of the Velvet side on Bad Boy, and following through to Cosmic in 2024, show the maturity of a long-running group and the routes into the solo and unit work. Red Flavor, then Psycho, then Feel My Rhythm covers the Red side, the Velvet side and how well they digest a concept now.

Editors' take Red Flavor / Psycho / Feel My Rhythm — three songs cover the two sides of Red and Velvet in an SM five-piece.

    Japan activity score

    KPOP DISCOVER original metric
    No. 48/ 210 groups

No. 48 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 23%)

    • 4Japanese releases
    • 24Japan-related tracks
    • 0Members from Japan
    • 1Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
