In July 2022 a five-piece slipped in quietly with the music video for Attention, and rolled straight into the scene with the debut EP New Jeans that August. Minji, Hanni, Danielle, Haerin, Hyein. Instead of pushing their voices out, they ride a rhythm that passes close and light. Laying grainy Y2K video texture, R&B and UK garage rhythms over everyday school uniforms quietly set aside the checklist of flashiness that K-pop had taken for granted.
The songs that work as an entrance are all there. Attention gives the first feel of the group, and the light movement of Hype Boy right after it brings out the texture of 2022. In 2023 Ditto carried the afterglow of a coming-of-age film, and OMG the same year widened both the narrative video work and the characters. Super Shy, also from that year, is built on simple repetition that travelled through short-form, and the dance practice hands over the whole movement and the lightness of the bodies at once.
In 2024 How Sweet reached the Korean and global markets while the Japanese debut single Supernatural opened the Japanese side, so the widening range became visible release by release. In November that year the exclusive contract with ADOR was terminated, and the situation has been fluid since. The official music videos and performance footage that can be confirmed are all still there, so Attention, then Ditto, then Super Shy will carry the first feel, the coming-of-age afterglow and the light repetition in one run.
Editors' take Attention / Ditto / Super Shy — three songs cover a five-piece from ADOR that re-edited the air of ordinary life through Y2K and R&B.
NewJeans layers the universality of jeans over the sound of new genes, so the name points at retro and new at once.
Hype Boy and Ditto exist in several official video versions, and the version label beside each one is what keeps them apart.
The surprise-style debut in 2022 broke with the usual teaser-led rollout and left a different first impression.
Get Up reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200, proof that a short EP could still travel worldwide.
Supernatural and Right Now work as the entry point on the Japanese side and are worth following apart from the Korean releases.
Anything tied to the operating situation around the group moves quickly, so officially announced releases, videos and links carry the most weight.
No. 119 of 211 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 56%)
The denominator is the 211 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
