3rd generation · SM Entertainment
エクソ / 엑소
EXO launched as two halves, one aimed at Korean-speaking audiences and one at Chinese-speaking ones, which was an enormous bet for 2012.

Last updated:
The concept takes its name from exoplanets and runs on superpowers and space imagery, carried by unusually dense singing and dancing.
Start here for the centre of SM Entertainment's third generation and for group dance at its most demanding.

What anchors EXO is a cosmic concept taken from the word exoplanet and singing and dancing packed at high density. SM Entertainment debuted them on April 8, 2012 with MAMA, starting as a large project on the two axes of EXO-K and EXO-M aimed at the Korean and Chinese-language markets at once. Growl broke through to a wide audience in 2013, with uniform-styled single-take footage and group choreography making a strong entrance.
Call Me Baby, Monster, Tempo and Love Shot kept renewing the momentum and the maturity through changes in the line-up. Checking the concept in the music videos, the group choreography in the dance practices and the singing in the live footage sorts out the strengths. The solo work of Baekhyun, Kai and D.O. is substantial too, so moving between the group and the member pages shows the whole picture.
After the comeback with Cream Soda in 2023, the stage now is to move between the group and the solo work. Growl, then Call Me Baby, then Love Shot runs from the signature song with wide appeal through the momentum to the matured EXO in a few minutes.
Editors' take Growl / Call Me Baby / Love Shot — three songs cover a cosmic concept and dense singing and choreography in an SM nine-piece.
No. 83 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 40%)
The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
