KPOP DISCOVER's SHINee note

What anchors SHINee is a sound that changes a great deal from song to song, and a character that survives all of it through the density of the voices and the dancing. SM Entertainment debuted the boy group in May 2008 with Replay, it began with Onew, Jonghyun, Key, Minho and Taemin, and the work today is discussed with the musical legacy Jonghyun left included, which makes it an important second-generation K-pop group.

The signature songs are Replay, which fixed the younger-boy R&B image, Lucifer, which people talk about for its complex choreography, View, which brought deep-house polish into K-pop, and Don't Call Me, which made the restart after military service land hard. The sound changes a great deal each time, yet the density of the voices and the dancing keeps SHINee recognisable.

Replay covers the R&B origin, the dance practice for Lucifer shows the force of the physical work, View moves on to the polished musicianship, and Don't Call Me shows a group still renewing itself after a long career. Replay, then Lucifer, then View runs from the origin through the choreography to the polish.

Editors' take Replay / Lucifer / View — three songs cover the move from R&B origins through complex choreography to polish in an important second-generation SM group.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 10/ 210 groups

No. 10 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 5%)

  • 8Japanese releases
  • 72Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 1Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
