KPOP DISCOVER's SNUPER note

SNUPER debuted in November 2015 from WIDMAY Entertainment with Shall We, a six-piece. Taewoong, Suhyun, Sangil, Woosung, Sangho and Sebin set out with synth pop in the Sweetune style at the centre. Without the backing of a large company, they chose a style of closing the distance with a committed fan base called Swing while stacking up releases in both Korea and Japan.

The four songs to choose as an entrance are Platonic Love, You=Heaven, It's Raining and Back:Hug. Platonic Love confirms the cool synth pop at the centre of SNUPER, and You=Heaven matches the brightness of summer to the members' faces. Moving to It's Raining brings a slightly more grown-up outline into view after the early freshness. Back:Hug is the entrance to the later Korean work, and the change in the writing carries the range of the group with it.

The Japanese work cannot be ignored in following SNUPER. Oh yeah!! and Stand by me were released in Japan in 2017, and the best-of SWING in 2019 gathered that path together. Seen as a trail of releases and events stacked up across Korea and Japan rather than a run of large Korean hits, the whole shape of the group is easier to hold. From 2021 Sebin restarted as part of OMEGA X, which opened a route back to SNUPER itself. Platonic Love, then It's Raining, then Back:Hug covers the cool synth pop, the grown-up outline and the range of the later period.

Editors' take Platonic Love / It's Raining / Back:Hug — three songs cover the cool clarity of synth pop and how it changed, from a WIDMAY Entertainment six-piece.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 47/ 210 groups

No. 47 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 22%)

  • 4Japanese releases
  • 22Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 2Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
