  • 2016
Miro showed a grown-up, synth-pop-leaning face, and Nightmare widened the range beyond the early freshness.
  • 2017

  • 2018
The Japanese single Juliet put the pairing of group name and fandom name into the catalogue itself.

KPOP DISCOVER's ROMEO note

ROMEO debuted in May 2015 from Pony Canyon Korea / CT Entertainment with Seunghwan, Yunsung, Milo, Minsung, Kyle, Hyunkyung and Kangmin. The cool air of the debut song Lovesick was typical of early third-generation boy groups, yet that shade of freshness stood out even among peers at the time. The fandom name Juliet pairs with the group name, and in 2018 it became the title of a Japanese single.

For a first listen, Lovesick gives the atmosphere of the debut and Target confirms the catchy signature. Miro, from 2016, changes the impression: the sound is arranged toward synth pop and the temperature is calmer, which shows the group was never only about freshness. Nightmare that same year stretched the range further, making clear that ROMEO had not been tied to one direction from the start.

Without U, from 2017, pushes the emotional line to the front and stands as the key later work. In 2023 appearances on Peak Time by some members and Hyunkyung joining KNK drew attention, and listeners began tracing their way back from there. This is a group whose entry point can be what the members did afterwards, not only the years when it was active. Lovesick, then Miro, then Without U runs from the fresh start through grown-up synth pop to the emotional later song.

Editors' take Lovesick / Miro / Without U — three songs running from a fresh start through grown-up synth pop to the emotional later work, from the seven-piece group at Pony Canyon Korea / CT Entertainment.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 180/ 210 groups

No. 180 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 86%)

  • 1Japanese releases
  • 2Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 0Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
