The core of Epik High is that they kept opening a door to K-pop listeners without giving up the intensity of hip-hop. Tablo, Mithra Jin and DJ Tukutz entered the context of Korean hip-hop with the 2003 debut Map of the Human Soul, and moving era by era from the underground to a wide audience, from Woollim Entertainment to YG Entertainment, they have crossed rapping, singing, live work and solo careers. Over more than two decades they have never been fixed to one sound and are always discussed in the present tense.
Three songs are enough for an entrance. Fly, a hit from 2005, is the origin where an underground colour still reached a wide audience. Love Love Love, the signature song from around 2007, holds density of writing and wide appeal together and proves that Epik High is more than a rap group. Born Hater, from 2014, stands out for the force of a collaboration binding rappers across generations. Line those three up and the three voices of Epik High, lyrical, critical and collective, come into view.
After moving to YG in 2012, Don't Hate Me and Up strengthened the video work and a festival-scale presentation, and in 2017 Love Story and Home Is Far Away brought out the depth of Tablo's storytelling. Strawberry in 2023 connected global collaboration to the present sound and added a new entrance to a catalogue two decades on.
