KPOP DISCOVER's BIGBANG note

What anchors BIGBANG is its influence over self-expression, fashion and live staging. A leading group of the second generation that already carried weight before K-pop spread as a global popular culture, it is now counted as the three of G-DRAGON, Taeyang and Daesung.

Fantastic Baby and Bang Bang Bang left a very strong memory as K-pop club anthems. Songs like Blue, Bad Boy and Still Life show the other side, singing loneliness and the passing of time rather than only spectacle.

Reading the current work and line-up means keeping the historical five-member era, with T.O.P and Seungri counted as former members, apart from the three-member present. Fantastic Baby, then Bang Bang Bang, then Still Life runs from club anthem to the passing of time.

Editors' take Fantastic Baby / Bang Bang Bang / Still Life — three songs cover the club anthems and the passing of time in a leading second-generation group.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 7/ 210 groups

No. 7 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 3%)

  • 7Japanese releases
  • 92Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 1Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
