2NE1

トゥエニィワン / 투애니원

2NE1 built the template that later became girl crush, and nothing else in the second generation sounded quite as abrasive.

KPOP DISCOVER's 2NE1 note

What anchors 2NE1 is the force that built the girl-crush context and a YG-style sound with strong individual characters. YG Entertainment debuted the four-piece girl group on May 6, 2009 with the digital single Fire, and the roles of CL, Bom, Dara and Minzy were clearly divided, making a hard entrance unlike the pure and delicate girl-group image of the time.

The axis of the signature songs is the debut Fire, I Am the Best, which widened recognition worldwide, and Come Back Home from the album CRUSH. The range swings across hip-hop, electro, reggae and ballads, and the YG-style sound and the force of the individual characters come out together.

Taking I Am the Best for the intensity first, then returning to Fire for the origin, then Come Back Home for the visual world and the weight of the later period, works well. Watching the choreography practice as well shows the sharpness of the physical work, not only the force of the songs. I Am the Best, then Fire, then Come Back Home is the way in.

Editors' take I Am the Best / Fire / Come Back Home — a YG four-piece that built the girl-crush context of K-pop.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 52/ 210 groups

No. 52 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 25%)

  • 3Japanese releases
  • 27Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 0Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
