In 30 seconds: AKMU

Folk-leaning pop, close family harmony and lyrics that carry the weight have kept the duo in favour far longer than most acts of their year.

Come here for songwriting rather than choreography, and for two voices that were built to sit together.

KPOP DISCOVER's AKMU note

AKMU is a brother and sister duo, and the best way in for anyone who wants K-pop that is not built on idols. Chanhyuk writes the words and the melody, Suhyun carries them with a clear voice, and that division of roles has held steady since the debut.

Taking 200% for the debut period, How Can I Love the Heartbreak, You're the One I Love for the biggest hit and Love Lee for the recent years keeps the order easy to hold. The range of the writing, from folk through to pop, comes through across their releases and official videos.

Editors' take A duo inside K-pop who write their own material and stake everything on the song and the words.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 197/ 210 groups

No. 197 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 94%)

  • 0Japanese releases
  • 0Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 1Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
