From debut to now

  • 2010
Mazeltov, from Nativity, was the debut, and on through All Day Long and Level Up the hard beats and large-ensemble performing stayed out front.
  • 2011
Lovability and Exciting widened the presentation from the early hardness towards a friendlier dance pop.
  • 2012
Spectacular and Phoenix brought together a signature song easy for late arrivals and a dance song made for the stage.
  • 2013
Illusion put out an aching, large-scale visual language and opened an important way into later ZE:A.
  • 2014
Breathe and St-Dagger show the later group activity moving between brightness and a grown-up air.
  • 2015
From Continue onward the view opened up across the older songs too, and the releases became something to follow as a catalogue.
  • 2016
Offshoots such as ZE:A J appeared, so the group itself and the solo activity of the members needed looking at apart.
  • 2017
From here the acting and variety work of Siwan, Hyungsik, Kwanghee and Dongjun became the way in, and returning to the group songs from there feels natural.
  • 2021
Older music videos were reposted on the official channel and on channels tied to the members, making the footage from the early to the late years easy to reach.

KPOP DISCOVER's ZE:A note

ZE:A debuted from Star Empire Entertainment on January 7, 2010 as a 9-member group. The weight of the phrase the name points to, Children of Empire, was already seeping through the hard beats of the debut work Nativity and the stage where 9 moved as one. The thickness of formation that only a large lineup allows, set out at the same time as the individuality of each member, was the axis that separated early ZE:A from other acts.

Aftermath, Illusion and Breathe are the 3 songs that act as signposts for a first listen. Aftermath gives you the skeleton of ZE:A as a dance act, and Illusion steps into an aching, large-scale visual language. Breathe carries the later air where brightness and calm sit together, and makes the change since the early days land all at once. Add the dance practice for Phoenix and another face appears, the fineness of the formations.

Reading the story of ZE:A is impossible without the individual routes: Siwan and Hyungsik acting, Kwanghee in variety, Dongjun singing and acting. Offshoots such as ZE:A J were born from 2016 onward, and following both the group and the members apart became the natural way to look. By 2021 the music videos from the early to the late years were in place again on the official channel, so the catalogue runs through easily. Mazeltov, then Aftermath, then Breathe covers the debut period, the skeleton of the dance songs and the later change.

Editors' take Mazeltov / Aftermath / Breathe — the change from debut to the later years across 3 songs, from a Star Empire Entertainment 9-piece.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 172/ 210 groups

No. 172 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 82%)

  • 1Japanese releases
  • 3Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 0Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
