KPOP DISCOVER's WayV note

What anchors WayV is being the Chinese unit inside the NCT system and keeping a centre of gravity in the sound however the language or the region changes. It began in 2019 with the Chinese version of Regular from Label V at SM Entertainment, and Kun, Ten, Winwin, Xiaojun, Hendery and Yangyang make up the six. Lucas left the group in 2023.

Take Off, Moonwalk and Love Talk widened the entrance, and from Kick Back, Phantom and On My Youth the grown-up dancing and vocals grew stronger. The theatrical presentation of the Phantom period is one reason the music videos and the performance footage are worth watching side by side.

Give Me That and Frequency in 2024 and BIG BANDS and Eternal White in 2025 can be followed along separate Korean, Chinese and Japanese routes. Love Talk, then Kick Back, then On My Youth runs through the entrance, the dancing and the expression of feeling.

Editors' take Love Talk / Kick Back / On My Youth — an NCT Chinese unit from SM whose centre of gravity in the sound survives any change of language or region, in three songs.

Japan activity score

KPOP DISCOVER original metric
No. 144/ 210 groups

No. 144 of 210 groups with recorded activity in Japan (top 69%)

  • 1Japanese releases
  • 6Japan-related tracks
  • 0Members from Japan
  • 0Official Japanese accounts

The denominator is the 210 groups, out of 525 covered by KPOP DISCOVER, whose raw score reaches at least one point. The score adds 10 points per Japanese-market release, 3 per Japan-related track, 12 per member from Japan, and 8 per official Japanese account. Japanese-market releases carry the most weight because they are the most direct evidence of activity; related tracks add track-level detail; members from Japan stand for Japanese-language communication and continuity; official accounts stand for a permanent point of contact. The weights are an editorial judgement, not a statistical optimisation, and the ranking tracks release volume in Japan closely.
