In 30 seconds: S.E.S.

Bada, Eugene and Shoo made the template that SM Entertainment kept returning to, and the songs have lasted better than nostalgia alone would explain.

Start here to hear the beginning properly, not as a period piece but as pop that still works.

KPOP DISCOVER's S.E.S. note

S.E.S. debuted from SM Entertainment on November 28, 1997 as a three-member girl group made up of Bada, Eugene and Shoo. Combining fresh R&B pop with dreamlike visuals, their style set the reference point for Korean girl groups of the time and became the prototype for the SM female groups that came after. Trace the line that runs on to Girls' Generation, Red Velvet and aespa, and S.E.S. is always the first name raised.

The three to hear first are I'm Your Girl, Dreams Come True and Love. The 1997 debut I'm Your Girl is bright, straight-ahead pop and packs the starting point of S.E.S. into one track. Dreams Come True from 1998 is the signature song where the dreamlike SM quality stands out most, and it is also known for the later remake by aespa. Reach Love in 1999 and a grown-up width of sound joins the freshness, so the added depth of the group is audible.

Be Natural, released in 2000, put the R&B leaning expression to the front, and the later cover by Red Velvet made that line of influence clearer still. After activity paused in 2002, Bada built a career in musicals and singing, Eugene in acting and Shoo on television. Remember came out early in 2016, and for the 20th anniversary release in 2017 the three gathered again, so the voices of the origin and the voices of now can be heard side by side. I'm Your Girl, then Dreams Come True, then Be Natural runs from the starting point through the dreamlike signature song to the depth of the R&B.

Editors' take I'm Your Girl / Dreams Come True / Be Natural — the prototype for the SM girl group, traced in three songs by a trio from SM Entertainment.
