KPOP DISCOVER's LOONA note

LOONA came through a staged debut plan that started in 2016 from HeeJin's solo song ViViD and debuted as all 12 in August 2018 with Hi High. Building up one member at a time, then the units, then the whole group, already worked as a body of work before the debut. Having different concepts and visuals for the solo, the unit and the full group gives the project a character unlike other groups.

If the entrance is unclear, starting from the bright debut image of Hi High and then feeling the visual beauty and the group choreography of all 12 in Butterfly is the clearest path. Butterfly is the song whose name comes up again and again when LOONA is discussed, built on a wide pop sound paired with tightly worked formations. From So What in 2020 the centre of gravity drops and the sound moves towards a sharper edge. PTT (Paint The Town) shows that later expression most clearly.

In 2021 came Hula Hoop / StarSeed for the Japanese market, and in 2022 Flip That and Luminous, with full-group activity running to 2022. Flip That shows another side of the later period in a brighter tone, and Luminous can be followed on its own as a Japanese release. Hi High, then Butterfly, then PTT (Paint The Town) covers the debut image, the depth of the world and the force of the later period.
