What anchors i-dle is authorship in the self-producing sense and a willingness to repaint what an idol group is. CUBE Entertainment debuted the group as (G)I-DLE in May 2018, and around Soyeon they are deeply involved in the writing and the concept design. Soojin left in 2021, and from TOMBOY onward they restarted as five.
The characters of the multinational line-up on LATATA, the dense worlds of Oh my god and HWAA, the message and wide appeal of TOMBOY, the self-affirmation and humour of Queencard: while keeping hooks with wide appeal, they have kept repainting what a woman and an idol can be.
In May 2025, at the seventh anniversary of the debut, they dropped the G and the brackets and renamed to i-dle, moving towards a wider self-definition. Looking at the large-stage feel of Super Lady and the work after the renaming shows that the writing and the self-definition at the core survive the frame coming off.
