Crayon Pop is the five-piece girl group Chrome Entertainment sent out in 2012. The line Geummi, Ellin, Choa, Way and Soyul chose was comic rather than cute, and legible rather than refined, built to lodge in the memory. Even with a small budget at the start, that character was already plain on the debut song Saturday Night.
What carried the name around the world was Bar Bar Bar. Helmets on, lined up across the front of the stage, jumping and jumping: easy to copy, impossible to forget once seen. From there, Dancing Queen, Uh-ee and FM swap retro feeling, trot-tinged comedy and squadron visuals in and out, and what stays constant underneath is a sense of play.
In 2014 Uh-ee folded a Korean sound into the pop, and an opening slot on a Lady Gaga show drew attention overseas. The Japanese official releases RaRiRuRe and Dancing All Night came in 2015, along with the squadron concept of FM. Evolution Pop Vol.1 in 2016 rounded off the catalogue, and from 2017 the group itself has been quiet. Bar Bar Bar, then FM, then Doo Doom Chit covers the shock of the helmet dance, the squadron concept and the choreographic sense of the late years.
