KPOP DISCOVER's WA$$UP note

WA$$UP debuted in August 2013 with Nari, Jiae, Sujin, Woojoo, Nada, Jinju and Dain, under Mafia Records and Sony Music Korea. At a time when K-pop favoured pure and cute concepts, they opened their own way in with club-leaning sound and twerk-heavy dance. That blend of hip-hop and pop makes them impossible to leave out of any account of the early twerk-dol lineage.

The tidiest order is Wa$$up first, to see the concept at the debut, then Nom Nom Nom for the catchy early signature. Fire, released in 2014, brings the hard beat further forward and makes the WA$$UP approach to dance stand out. Holding hip-hop colour and a club feel at the core while changing face from song to song is where the listening pleasure sits.

In 2017 Nada, Jinju and Dain left over contract disputes, and Color TV was released by Nari, Jiae, Sujin and Woojoo as a four-piece. Activity ended from that year onward, and what remains now is an archive of official video. Wa$$up, then Fire, then Color TV runs from the concept at the debut through the hard beat to the final four-member lineup.

Editors' take Wa$$up / Fire / Color TV — three songs holding the early twerk-dol lineage of K-pop, from the seven-piece group at Mafia Records.
