LC9 took their name from League of Competition #9 and debuted from Nega Network in May 2013 as a five-piece boy group. Rasa, J-Hyo, King, Jun and A.O made up the lineup, and the debut song MaMa Beat left an early mark with a rough-cut music video featuring Ga In and a sharp performance. The active years ran only from 2013 to 2015, yet the short catalogue reads all the denser for it.
MaMa Beat is close to the only door there is. Footage that turns roughness into a weapon arrives at the same time as a group dance whose force all points one way, and the pull it has runs on an axis away from polish. East of Eden, from July 2013, swings that mood completely around and steers toward a calm tone you would not think came from the same group. Those two songs alone give a large sense of how far the swing could go.
From 2015 the group stopped and the members went separate ways. A.O carried on in contexts far from the LC9 years, taking part in Produce X 101 among other things. Some joined the later groups LU:KUS, BLK and NIK, so LC9 works as a starting point for crossing third-generation K-pop more widely. MaMa Beat, then East of Eden, then Say What?! covers the raw heat, the quiet swing and the character of the members.
