Doggedly introduced the voices before the official debut, and the later singles lean soulful rather than concept-driven.

KPOP DISCOVER's SPICA note

SPICA debuted from B2M Entertainment in February 2012 as a five-piece. The January pre-release Doggedly sketched the outline of the voices, and Russian Roulette made it official. In the debut year alone came Painkiller, I'll Be There and Lonely, placing the group at the entrance of the third generation with a grown-up sound and thick voices from the start. The name comes from the brightest star of Virgo.

Three songs form the axis: Tonight, You Don't Love Me and Secret Time. Tonight balances vocal weight with bright pop and works as the representative track, while You Don't Love Me brings a more soulful expression forward. Secret Time, from 2016, came after about two years away and lands as lighter dance pop, which makes it interesting to hear against the earlier work. Everyone in the team can sing, so listening for how unison and part splits are used opens up more.

In 2014 You Don't Love Me left the soul-leaning signature, after which the English track I Did It stepped into a separate lane aimed at the United States. Activity resumed with Secret Time in 2016, but the group came to an end in 2017, and the members carried on as singers, actors and in projects such as KEEMBO. Russian Roulette, then Tonight, then You Don't Love Me runs from the outline of the debut through the balanced signature to the soulful expression.

Editors' take Tonight / You Don't Love Me / Secret Time — built on vocal weight from 2012 to 2016 by the five-piece group from B2M Entertainment.
