SG Wannabe is a four-piece vocal group that debuted on January 20, 2004. Kim Yong-jun, Kim Jin-ho, Lee Seok-hoon and Chae Dong-ha put the voices and the storytelling to the front and arrived with drama-style music videos. Coming from Mnet Media and Stone Music Entertainment, they became a group that stands for Korean popular music in the second generation, built on ballads and R&B.
For a first listen the three songs are Timeless, Partner for Life and Lalala. Timeless gives the heavy three-part harmony of the debut period at once. Partner for Life shows how carefully the arrangements stack up the ache, and moving to the brighter colour of Lalala brings the range of the voices into view. Going back and forth between the studio and the stage through the official KBS archive footage also confirms how strong the singing is live.
After a stretch in the 2010s where the releases came further apart, The Voice restarted things in 2015. The official music video and the broadcast stage footage are still there, an entrance for hearing the early songs again beside them. From 2021 official television footage has brought the older songs back into circulation, confirming a catalogue that does not end with a single hit. Timeless, then Partner for Life, then Lalala covers the heavy harmony, the ache and the brighter colour.
